Essentially, this review has been written after a thorough assessment of the smartphone in various categories. Those categories include its design, display, camera, battery, security & sensors, and storage performance. Moreover, you will get to find out the thoughts our expert critique has concerning the Samsung Galaxy J3 Orbit. You will also get to find out the good and bad sides of the smartphone and then conclude if it will be the right choice for you.

My Initial Thoughts

The Samsung Galaxy J3 Orbit is a successor to the J3 Luna Pro. While the Samsung Galaxy J3 Orbit comes with some features similar to those on the Samsung Galaxy J3 Luna Pro, it also features some necessary upgrades.

The Samsung Galaxy J3 Orbit comes with many features that are commonly seen in Samsung smartphones. To mention a few, it comes with a vivid display and a sturdy build. Moreover, this smartphone doesn’t fall short of expectations in terms of appearance. Although its design structure could be said to be a bit outdated, this smartphone looks attractive nonetheless.

Samsung Galaxy J3 Orbit Design, Dimension & Weight Review

Samsung proficiently holds its reputation for designing attractive devices. The Samsung Galaxy J3 Orbit exceeds expectations by being even more attractive than the average budget smartphone. Moreover, Samsung has always done well at maintaining a unique high-grade feel even on their budget line-up. This is one of the characteristics that make the brand stand out from many others. Although, the smartphone’s design doesn’t conform with modern aesthetics. The top and bottom bezels still take the form of the older design pattern in a 16:9 aspect display. Contrary to the trending ultra-slim bezel design, the bezels on the Samsung Galaxy J3 Orbit are a bit chunky. Aside from that, the Samsung Galaxy J3 Orbit doesn’t really look like a budget smartphone. It has a sleek design that makes it look elegant. Despite its mostly plastic build, the Samsung Galaxy J3 Orbit feels very premium. It has a matte black finish on its back that makes it cooler. However, its matte black finish makes it a little bit slippery in the hand. To reduce the tendency of the smartphone from slipping off your palm, Samsung made the edges and sides of the device a bit rough. Thanks to its plastic build, the Samsung Galaxy J3 Orbit weighs just 152 g, making it considerably light. Moreover, its 142.5 x 71.1 x 10.2 mm dimension makes it fit perfectly into the hand. Moreover, since the Samsung Galaxy J3 Orbit quite small, it also fits nicely into the pocket. This makes carrying it about more fun. Moving on to the physical features of the Samsung Galaxy J3 Orbit, you will find a Samsung logo just above the display. Beside this logo lies the front camera, an LED light for notification, a proximity sensor. Also, the speaker is faintly positioned above the Samsung logo. Below the display, the Samsung Galaxy J3 Orbit features a physical home button like most Samsung phones. To the left of the home button is the recent apps button. Meanwhile, we have the back button on the right side of the home button. These capacitive touch buttons bring the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S9 to mind – the buttons on the J3 Orbit look very familiar to the ones on Galaxy S8 and S9. On the left side of the Samsung Galaxy J3 Orbit, we have our separated volume controls. Furthermore, the left side features a dedicated power button and surprisingly, a side-firing speaker. At the bottom, there’s a micro USB charging port. Unfortunately, there’s no USB Type-C port. The bottom of the phone also houses a headphone jack and a microphone positioned alongside the micro USB charging port. Moving over to the back of the smartphone, there’s a rear camera as expected. Below this camera, there’s a LED flashlight and the Samsung logo. Overall, the design of the Samsung Galaxy J3 Orbit is nice enough for a budget smartphone. Hence, it scores a seven in this review.

Samsung Galaxy J3 Orbit Display Features Review

The Samsung Galaxy J3 Orbit is equipped with a 5.5-inch TFT display. This display has an HD resolution of 128 x 720. Being just 5.5-inch, the Samsung Galaxy J3 Orbit’s display is not the largest you will find. However, its small size means the smartphone can easily be used with one hand. As you would expect from a Samsung product, the Samsung Galaxy J3 Orbit’s display is vibrant and clear. It is definitely one of the best things about this smartphone. Color accuracy on the display is on point and very detailed. Hence, viewing angles on the smartphone is great. Furthermore, this display gets sufficiently bright enough to be used in outdoor environments. It is also sensitive and responsive to touch. Overall, the smartphone’s display is awesome for the price. Therefore, the Samsung Galaxy J3 Orbit scores an eight in this review.

Samsung Galaxy J3 Orbit Camera Features Review

The Samsung Galaxy J3 Orbit features an 8 MP rear camera and a 5 MP front camera. For the price of this smartphone, its camera specification is not bad. Much to my delight, the Samsung Galaxy J3 Orbit’s rear camera performs considerably well. Pictures taken with the smartphone come out with good details. Although, this result isn’t exactly the same in lowlight conditions, images taken in this condition are a bit okay too. For a budget smartphone, this smartphone’s camera can be considered to be quite solid. Moreover, the rear camera features auto-focus and LED flash light that helps improve picture quality. Likewise, the front camera is also equipped with the auto-focus feature that improves its performance. In addition, the Samsung Galaxy J3 Orbit is capable of recording videos in 1080p which is awesome considering that it’s a budget smartphone. Besides, the Samsung Galaxy J3 Orbit is one of those few smartphones that has this feature in both its rear and selfie cameras. In conclusion, this smartphone’s camera is relatively fair for its price. Therefore, it scores a seven in this review.

Samsung Galaxy J3 Orbit Battery Life and Talk Time Review

The Samsung Galaxy J3 Orbit comes with a 2600 mAh battery. In relation to its specifications – its HD display in particular – a 2600 mAh battery is considerably small. This aspect is obviously where the Samsung Galaxy J3 Orbit decided to cut costs. The smartphone requires more than a single charge for average daily usage. At most, the smartphone can last for 19 hours before the battery drains completely. The Samsung Galaxy J3 Orbit can last for over 21 days on standby. To make it worst, the Samsung Galaxy J3 Orbit doesn’t support fast charging. Nonetheless, the battery charges up to full capacity from 0% in less than 2 hours because of its small capacity. In conclusion, the Samsung Galaxy J3 Orbit scores a six for its average battery capacity.

Samsung Galaxy J3 Orbit Storage Options & Performance Review

The Samsung Galaxy J3 Orbit is equipped with 16 GB internal storage capacity. For its price, the 16 GB internal storage capacity is expected and within range. Furthermore, it is relatively fair considering that many smartphones within this smartphone’s range are equally equipped with 16 GB internal storage as well. For those that don’t store a lot of files and data, this capacity is sufficient enough. However, it is only a matter of time until those files add up to consume the storage capacity. Moreover, the real capacity available for storage is 9 GB since the operating system uses about 7 GB of the internal storage capacity. Fortunately, you can expand the storage on this device with up to 256 GB of SD card. This enhances storage management on the smartphone. You can store more files on the external microSD card. Hence, the Samsung Galaxy J3 Orbit scores a seven in this review for its good storage options.

Samsung Galaxy J3 Orbit Security Features & Sensors Review

Sensors are components used in smartphones to detect changes in the environment such as changes in brightness, temperature, and movements. These sensors help to convert perceived environmental changes into electronic signals that can be processed by the device. The Samsung Galaxy J3 Orbit comes with an accelerometer that detects the orientation of the phone. Applications on the smartphone use this sensor to determine whether your phone is in portrait or landscape orientation. Furthermore, the Samsung Galaxy J3 Orbit features a light sensor that automatically adjusts the smartphone’s screen brightness according to the amount of ambient light. This sensor makes it more comfortable to look at the screen even under sunlight. In addition, the Samsung Galaxy J3 Orbit also features a proximity sensor that detects the presence of nearby objects. With this sensor, when you are making a phone call, the smartphone automatically turns off the screen when it detects that it is close to your ear. Unfortunately, although not surprisingly, the Samsung Galaxy J3 Orbit doesn’t come with a fingerprint sensor for security. You only get your regular password and pattern lock features. Hence, it scores six because of its limited sensors and lack of fingerprint sensor for security.

My Final Thoughts

The Samsung Galaxy J3 Orbit isn’t exactly the best budget smartphone. In comparison with similar smartphones in its range, it falls behind in terms of performance and storage expansion options. Nonetheless, this smartphone has features to be admired like its display. Overall, the Samsung Galaxy J3 Orbit is considerably good for its price point.
